The grazing system and open-plan pens for cattle, as well as the productivity of our mother cows, were the main issues in our family's mind when we undertook the changes. The new cowshed also conceals state-of-the-art technology. The cows are milked by an automated milking system, which makes our own work schedule much more flexible. This same milking system allows us to increasing the milking frequency to 3-4 milkings per cow and day, which also results in improved udder health for freshly lactating cows. The roofed area used by animals to rest and lie down, along with their walking pen and drinking area, are always accessible to the cows. With the space structured in this way, the animals are encouraged to move frequently on the one hand and, on the other, have the opportunity, depending on the situation, either to be together or get out of the other animals' way. In a facility such as this, the criteria for species-appropriate cow husbandry, i.e. exercise, social contact, light and fresh air, can be ideally met .
